Historic Timeline

Where We've Been

What's in a Name?

William Stuart Brighton acquired 80 acres at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon. By 1895, the Brightons had opened a store, a post office and two hotels. It is for the legacy of this hard-working and welcoming family that Brighton Resort is named.

Passing Through

The first hotel is built for the town of Brighton. People would travel for 7 HOURS via stage coach from downtown Salt Lake to reach the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Utah's First Ski Area

At this time in history there were only 15 ski areas across the U.S. and none in Utah, but in 1936, Brighton earned the reputation of becoming Utah's first ski area thanks to a primitive T-bar built from wire and an old elevator motor.

Getting Somewhere

In 1955, the first double chair lift, Mt Majestic, was constructed parallel to the old T-bar thanks to Zane Doyle, Willard Jensen and Dean L Jensen.

Becoming the Brighton Ski Bowl

In 1963, Millicent Lift is purchased from the Brighton Recreation Company. This coming fresh off the heels from from the 1959 insallation of the Mary Lift set up the Brighton Ski Bowl to grow to what it is today.

Growth on the Horizon

Following Boyne's purchase of Brighton in 1986, one of Utah's first high-speed quads is erected at Brighton Resort in 1991. Two more high-speed quads, a triple chair, expanded night skiing terrain, snowmaking and more improvements are made with the help of the Boyne Resorts corporation.

Connecting Big Cottonwood

The "Sol-Bright" trail is built that connects Brighton Resort to Solitude Mountain Resort.

Go Big or Go Home

The Disney Channel Original Movie classic, Johnny Tsunami, is filmed at Brighton Resort.

Accommodating the Masses

Milly Chairlift is replaced to make improvements for the growing population discovering their love of skiing.

Exanded Night Riding Terrain

After years of Explorer, Majestic & Crest lifts open for Night Riding, Brighton opens up Snake Creek as part of the night skiing terrain.
