Brighton Hosts Summer Clean-Up Days to Rid Mountain of Litter

By Erika Kazi

During early June, volunteers and members of the Brighton community gathered together to put themselves to work in the hot sun to pick up the garbage left over at the end of the season.

Altogether, over 2 days, 80 volunteers spent 4 hours picking up 3 ½ truck beds of garbage off our hill. That’s an enormous amount of garbage!

By picking up this garbage, we are helping to preserve the beauty of the mountain we all know and love.

Participants pulled items out of Big Cottonwood Creek tributaries to help preserve Salt Lake City’s watershed. They also acted as stewards of habitats breaming with our neighboring wildlife

The events each lasted just about two hours and volunteers gathered afterwards for lunch and to discuss their most incredible findings.

A few phones and wallets were found and returned to their owners.  There were some goggles, lift tickets, beer cans, socks, gloves, etc.  A 6-year-old volunteer found enough change to buy herself ice cream at the Brighton Store!

This family-friendly event was a great chance to get outside and give back to the community.

Special thanks to Cottonwood Canyons Foundation and Brighton Institute for helping make these events fun and successful!
